A landmark win for a home-built boat

Akaine Ubayasiri of Royal College out-sailed a competitive fleet to take first place in the Commodore's Race 2026, one of the most prestigious events on the Ceylon Motor Yacht Club (CMYC) calendar. The win, recorded yesterday, adds another standout result to a strong season of club racing in Colombo.

What makes the victory especially significant for the local sailing community is the boat itself. Ubayasiri raced a Laser-class sailing dinghy designed and built in Sri Lanka by Precision Composites (PCPL) — clear proof that a locally manufactured composite hull can compete at, and win, the highest level of domestic racing.

Built in Sri Lanka, proven on the water

The Precision Composites replica Laser is engineered with the same resin-infusion philosophy behind the company's offshore hulls: stiffer, lighter and more consistent than traditional hand-laid construction. The result is a responsive, race-ready single-hander that holds its shape and speed through demanding conditions — exactly the kind of edge that decides a closely fought regatta.

A locally built Laser, a national-class win — and a milestone for Sri Lankan boat-building.

About the Precision Composites Laser

The PCPL Laser (4.23 m LOA) is a single-handed racing dinghy built for training, club racing and domestic regattas. Tuned for performance and durability and supported locally, it gives Sri Lankan sailors a competitive platform that is engineered, built and maintained right here at home. Akaine Ubayasiri's Commodore's Race title is a powerful endorsement of that approach.
